In honor of the 237th birthday of the United States Constitution, Âé¶čAV (Âé¶čAV) held its annual Constitution Day celebration on September 19.

Guest speaker Dr. Matthew Sherman, Âé¶čAV History instructor, addressed students, faculty, staff and guests on the history and importance of the Constitution. He noted that the Constitution has allowed for change and progress throughout history and cited examples such as women’s suffrage and the end of slavery.

“The Constitution did not create a perfect government, nor did it create a perfect union in 1787,” Sherman said. “It did, however, create a framework that would allow the United States to progress toward the founding principles that that we hold dear: freedom, liberty and equality.”

Members of the Person High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) presented the nation’s colors and lowered and raised Âé¶čAV’s American flag. Members of the Lester Blackwell American Legion Post 138, Commander Don Nowell, Reginald “Reggie” Horton and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 72 Commander Ronald Epps, were in attendance to demonstrate the proper retirement of a worn Amerian flag. Due to the rain, they were unable to demonstrate the retirement in its entirety, but explained that once the flags are burned, the ashes are buried at the Person County Veterans Memorial Park.

Worn flags in need of retirement can be dropped off at the American Legion (218 Chub Lake Street, Roxboro, North Carolina 27573) for proper disposal.
