Who can use CPL?

Any student who plans to enroll can use CPL towards an approved degree program. This includes both curriculum programs (AA, AAS, etc.) and Continuing Education credentials.

Is Credit for Prior Learning right for me?

Consider using the following question to determine if you are eligible or should consider CPL. If any of these apply to you, you may be a good candidate:

• Did you take coursework or an exam in high school that could earn college credit? This may be courses on the High School Articulation Agreement, or AP or IB courses.
• Can you demonstrate skills and knowledge learned through work or experience?
• Are you comfortable taking a timed, online exam? Or are you more comfortable sharing your learning through writing, artwork, or hands on demonstrations?
• Have you earned a national or industry certification; for example, Public Safety Training, Google Cybersecurity Certificate, or have you passed the Plumbing Contractor examination?
• Are you, or were you, a member of the Military?

What do I need to do to use CPL?

First, think about your career objectives, and identify other opportunities to use your learning. You should explore our website to see where and how we award credit. Having an idea about your goals, experiences and knowledge can help you navigate through our recommended second step.

Second, talk with your college’s admissions representative, advisor or other designated CPL person. They can help walk you through the steps. You’ll need to apply and be admitted to Â鶹AV to use CPL.

Finally, make sure you have access to all the necessary documents. We can’t award CPL without transcripts, awards, etc.; so, it’s important you know how to access these.

Is CPL only retroactive? Can I plan to use it in the future?

Each college may have a different policy on how and if you can plan to use CPL as part of a future credential pathway, but in general, YES, you can plan for future use. For example, if you know you can pass a CLEP exam in Information Systems, consider taking that exam to satisfy a degree requirement. However, it’s very important that you speak with your advisor before doing so.

Are all forms of CPL accepted?

Each college has its own policy about which types of CPL they award; you’ll need to talk with your advisor to learn more.

Is CPL the same thing as transfer credit?

No. Transfer credit comes from other colleges and universities. CPL comes from non-traditional learning such as exams, apprenticeships, portfolio assessments, etc. Because of this, these credits are treated differently, and may not apply towards institutional residency, for financial aid calculations, or more. Talk with an academic advisor to learn more. 

Will credits earned by CPL transfer?

Within the North Carolina Community College system, credits award for CPL will transfer to other community colleges, assuming they are on your transcript and apply towards your intended degree or credential. The transfer of those credits to non-NCCCS schools is not guaranteed. You’ll want to talk to the school you intend to transfer to about how these credits may transfer and apply to your degree.

What does CPL cost?

The cost varies depending on the type of assessment. You’ll pay CollegeBoard or Prometric directly for their exams. Or you’ll pay for credentials like CompTIA or Safe SERV. These are not eligible for financial aid. Portfolio Review or Credit by Exam costs are set by individual colleges. Speak to your advisor or visit the CPL website to learn more.

What is considered formal documentation or proof of completion?

This answer depends on the type of CPL. In some cases, like AP or CLEP, the scores will need to be sent directly from the CollegeBoard. For Military credit (except the CCAF), the Joint Services Transcript will be needed. Other credentialing agencies may need to send formal notice of completion, or perhaps you have a digital diploma or proof of completion. For other types of CPL, like challenge exams, you’ll need to coordinate with the instructor at Â鶹AV.

How much CPL can I use?

Up to 75% of your degree can be awarded through transfer credit and/or CPL. However, you still need to meet all degree requirements to earn the degree, so work with an academic advisor to determine the best plan for you.
