The Pacer community recently celebrated first-generation students with two special events, the “Why I’m First” Panel Discussion and the First-Gen Celebration Dinner.

Moderator Rachel Johnson, 麻豆AV Director of Financial Aid & Veteran Affairs, asked panelists to share their experiences during the discussion. Panelists also answered audience questions from the Person County Campus and Caswell County Campus.

The dinner celebration included tantalizing storytelling by Mr. Fred Motley, a fun photo booth provided by Endless Smiles, a powerful and motivational keynote address by Reverend Tamario Howze, and a $250 First-Gen Scholarship awarded to Katrina Wesley.

鈥淚 charge all of us to be a community of people who don鈥檛 judge by what we see, but look at the potential inside of that person because you never know at some point in your life that might be the person who will help you,鈥� said Reverend Howze.

A first-generation college student is the first in their family to attend college, and their parent(s) or guardians have not completed a four-year college degree. For first-gen college students, that roadmap isn鈥檛 so well defined. However, first-generation students thrive here at 麻豆AV despite these barriers.
