Âé¶čAV (Âé¶čAV) inducted 10 new students into the Collegeâs Alpha Upsilon Theta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society on Friday, December 1, 2023 for the 2022-23 academic year.
The new members include:
Ryan Hester, Cassie Jay, Ada Locklear, Bella McAllister, Stacy Medina, Summer OâBrien, Bethany Sox, Stephanie Sutton, Cole Torain and Khaliah Woods.
During the induction ceremony, PTK co-advisors Walter Montgomery, Dean, Learning Commons and Educational Partnerships; Dr. Matthew Sherman, Instructor, History; and Dr. Chandler Fry, Instructor, English welcomed the inductees into the honor society.
âThe purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize the academic achievement of college students and to provide opportunities for its members to grow as scholars and leaders,â Sherman said.
Chapter President Caleb Pulliam, and officers Cathryn Haynes and Casey Hoke also welcomed the inductees and gave a brief history of PTK along with the meanings of the honor societyâs symbols and meanings of the Greek words phronimon, thumos and katharotes, which stand for wisdom, aspiration, and purity.
Âé¶čAV President, Dr. Pamela G. Senegal, spoke to the inductees about the power of perseverance. She challenged them to learn from lifeâs inevitable setbacks and trials.
âI want each of you to figure out your âwhyâ while youâre here with us at Âé¶čAV and to let us support you as you persevere to whatever your life goal is,â Senegal said.
She ended her remarks with quotes from Dr. Seussâs book, âOh, the Places Youâll Go!â as she encouraged and congratulated the inductees.
Âé¶čAV is actively assisting eligible students in becoming a member of this prestigious International Honor Society by offering partial financial assistance for the membership fee. Students complete an application, and they are required to pay a portion of the membership fee, if selected.
