Âé¶čAVâs (Âé¶čAV) Student Government Association (SGA) and SGA advisor received awards at the North Carolina Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association (N4CSGA) spring conference held on April 6.
Âé¶čAVâs SGA was awarded the Top âCâ Award, also known as the college of the year award, for their involvement and interaction on campus as well as in the community. The SGA has shown their dedication to community engagement by recently partnering with the Person County Recreation, Arts and Parks Department to offer intramural sports for Âé¶čAV students, employees and alumni. The SGA also regularly hosts various events on campus such as âBlack Joyâ for Black History Month and âGalentinesâ for Womenâs History Month where they invited women community leaders and business owners to attend.
Community college SGAs had to submit flyers from their events, evidence of how they have worked with the community, evidence of marketing efforts and participate in interviews where they were asked various questions related to their submissions to be eligible for the award. Âé¶čAVâs SGA competed against larger community colleges for the award such as Rowan-Cabarrus, Surry, Forsyth Tech, Randolph and Cleveland.
Tiffany Skouby, Âé¶čAV Director of Student Engagement/SGA Advisor, was awarded the Central Division Advisor of the Year award for her leadership dedication to Âé¶čAVâs SGA and the N4CSGA. Skouby has encouraged the SGAâs involvement in not only campus and community events, but also on the state level by participating in the N4CSGA, mock legislative sessions and advocating for community colleges on the state level.
Tommy Williams, Âé¶čAVâs SGA president, expressed that âcommunity is part of the college; itâs written in our name.â
Jahlia Winstead, Âé¶čAVâs SGA secretary, explained that the goal with SGA events is to always have community involvement. Winstead and Hayley Ale, Âé¶čAVâs SGA Publicity Officer, are part of the planning committee for SGA events.
âItâs been important to us this year to connect our community with our college,â Winstead said.
âIt all goes back to community,â Skouby said. âWe get to talk to different people; we get to learn from each other, and it makes us better and the campus community better.â
Skouby expressed that she and the SGA were both shocked and thrilled to receive the Top âCâ Award.
âOne of the things that I really love about our SGA is the fact that weâre built from different backgrounds, weâre different ages, but weâre all learning from each other and growing from each other,â Skouby said. âIt has really helped us cater to the diverse community that is Person County and Caswell County.â
Âé¶čAVâs SGA is a student representative body that promotes student advocacy, voting initiatives, budget recommendation, student events, support of student organizations and community service. For more information about SGA, contact Tiffany Skouby at tiffany.skouby@piedmontcc.edu.
