Person Early College for Innovation and Leadership (PECIL) student Bryson Gregory completed his Eagle Scout project during the fall 2025 semester, paying homage to PECIL鈥檚 principal, Shirlrona Johnson.

The highest rank attainable in Scouting America, an Eagle Scout is awarded to scouts who demonstrate leadership and service by earning at least 21 merit badges and complete a community service project before turning 18. Choosing a project that would be a testament of time, Gregory chose to dedicate a bench outside of PECIL to honor Johnson.

鈥淲hen I think about someone who has made a very big impact in my life and the community, I thought about my principal, Mrs. Johnson,鈥� Gregory said. 鈥淚 wanted to dedicate something to her that meant something to me, my brother and the community.鈥�

Gregory says that Johnson has been a positive influence in his life throughout his educational journey. From recommending tutoring to simply offering a word of encouragement when most needed, Gregory is grateful for her continued support. Even though his brother graduated from PECIL several years ago, Johnson continues to check-in on how he鈥檚 doing and offers support when needed.

To complete the Eagle Scout project, Gregory had to delegate every responsibility involved, testing the leadership skills he had been taught during his time in Scouts. After the project was completed, Gregory had to sit in front of a board and tell them how the project went, along with how his journey through Scouts has been.

Along with leadership skills, Gregory says that Scouts has also taught him communication skills, independence and how to be time oriented. After Gregory graduates from PECIL, he plans to attend the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill where he has already been accepted into their Future Business Admits program. At UNC, he plans to pursue a degree in finance and minor in economics.
